Mother culture is my absolute FAVORITE. This will be my first time sharing about my readings. I have two little ones, so I will probably lack consistency in my readings, and some books overlap over the months. Nevertheless, I absolutely adore reading about what other moms read to find inspiration. You will notice over time that I read books for knowledge a lot. Not just about motherhood or homeschooling but also to learn new skills so I will also share about all that with you here.
I cannot remember if this started in July or earlier, but I have been focusing on art. I have been questioning BEAUTY and how it can be displayed at home. I have been questioning how to teach about art (drawing, singing, music, writing). I have been looking at how I will be teaching my children certain topics. With that being said, I will take me multiple years to go over all the books and information and search everything. So I will simply share as I go.
Van Gogh Has a Broken Heart: What Art Teaches Us About the Wonder and Struggle of Being Alive – Russ Ramsey
I loved this book as well, Russ Ramsey goes over another selection of artists and he explains things so well… if you’re like me and never stopped to consider art, beauty and suffering, you need to read this. I learnt a lot about major artists as well. Again, lots of food for thoughts here.
Rembrandt Is in the Wind: Learning to Love Art through the Eyes of Faith – Russ Ramsey
“How do art and faith intersect?”. Russ Ramsey tells us more about the life of a selection of artists and their work. He explains us so simply how faith can be seen through their stories.
Books about calligraphy for adults and children
Teaching children to write and beauty and art… I ended up here, looking at books for calligraphy.
I found this one that I really like for adults/children: it has an explanation about each type with historical context and practical explanations. For children specifically, I also found this and this.
The Story of Handwriting: Origins and Development – Alfred Fairbank
I started looking into books about the story of handwriting because I am preparing to teach my children how to write and it got me thinking about so many questions: how did it use to be? Why do we write the way we do? why do we teach this handwriting style and not another? and a lot more. That’s when I came across this book at the library. It’s old fashion but honestly perfect, the chapters are small and loaded with information. It’s a perfect
Juliette Artistides – all her books!
I started by reading her two books about drawing, this one and this one. And now I’m deep diving into her oil painting books (this one and this one) which I will likely finish mid-September.
She also has two books to draw in, this one (I have) and this one. I got one of them and started doing it an honestly… if you want to learn how to draw like the old masters, if you really want to learn how to draw very well, this is an amazing resource with many references to other books as well. I am not an artist but after reading Russ Ramsey’s books I wondered about whether anybody was still learning and teaching how to draw as well as Vermeer and Caravaggio. Considering I will also want to teach my children how to draw, I started searching and found Juliette Aristides’ books. (She has one more book but I haven’t read it so I can’t talk about it).
The painter’s secret geometry – Charles Bouleau
I merely started this one so I think it’ll be a read for September as well. It is a book about composition in art and I thought it will benefit me if I start drawing or painting and also when we will do art appreciation with my children once they’re old enough.
In June, I was reading all about machine and hand quilting and if that’s something you’d like to read about I could do a little rewinding. Let me know.
If you read any of these or know of other books related, don’t hesitate to share in the comments! I am sure it would benefit not only me but everyone reading this post. If you like any of these or read them, share your opinion !

What a rich and beautiful list of books!
We homeschool and the story of handwriting really caught my eye! I’ll have to look for that one at our library.
Loved reading through your recent reads. Added the Van Gogh to my Goodreads as TBR.
Thank you for the great book suggestions! You are speaking my love language😊
Love this! I’m very intrigued by the handwriting book. I love handwriting so much that I have framed pictures on the wall over my kitchen table of recipes, handwritten by friends and family members. I get compliments on this collage of pics all the time. Thank you for sharing these!
